Heart Monitor Watches - Here's How to Choose the Right One

A lot of people who work at getting and staying fit have found out that heart rate monitors are a useful tool. If you have made the decision that using a heart monitor watch will help make your workouts even better, then your next step is finding the right one. Since there are hundreds of heart monitor watches available, here are a few tips on choosing the right one.

You'll find that a heart monitor watch has a lot of different levels of functionality. Monitors range from those that track heart rate to those that have a computer right in the wristwatch. There are heart rate monitors that are designed to be used for a specific sport, for weekend athletes or world class athletes, as well as for both women and men.

In deciding which monitor to choose, it's a good idea to start by thinking about how you plan to use it. After that decide what you are planning to track and what you'd like to measure. Don't forget to think in terms of your long range fitness goals.

Not every heart monitor will work for every sport. When you are deciding on features keep in mind what your goals are in six months or a year from now.

Even though you probably don't want to spend money on features you think you might not use, you also don't want to exclude a feature that you might use down the road when your fitness has moved up to a new level.

If you are a runner, the array of watches is huge. But for a cyclist, swimmer, or triathlete there are fewer monitors designed specifically for your sport. Once you know what sport or activity you will be primarily engaged in, you can start eliminating some monitors.

At that point, think about what features you really want in a monitor.

Are you interested in tracking your workout sessions from one day to the next and downloading them to your home computer so you can compare results? Or do you just want to see your daily performance on the monitor screen?

Do you only want access to some basic information like heart rate, distance and speed, or are you interested in getting more detailed stats and data about your workout along with customized recommendations for future workouts?

Where will you be training? Will you be mainly outdoors on a variety of terrains, or will you train primarily using indoor equipment like treadmills or rowing machines? You will need different features depending on where you train.

Are navigation features such as an altimeter, a compass or a GPS important?

The cost of heart monitor watches can vary greatly depending on what you want. For many fitness buffs, monitors are as necessary as any other fitness gear. Consider all your options before buying and you are sure to get the right heart monitor watch with every feature you could possibly want.
